Good vs. Bad Stress 02/09/09
One of the key things I do with my clients is to get them to recognize the different stressors in their lives and how they can be affecting their health and waistline.
There are good types of stress and bad types of stress. Skipping meals, processed and chemical foods, dehydration, sleep deprivation, food allergies, too much caffeine, alcohol, smoking, drugs, financial worries, emotional stresses (family, relationships) are all a bad types of stress.
Exercise in most forms is a good type of stress. It is a stress though and you have to be aware of that. Some types of exercise are more stressful than others. Yoga vs. Standard gym workouts vs. Crossfit workouts for example. The more stressful your workout the more important it is to repair from that stress.
We need stress and we need stress hormones…too much or too little is an issue though. The stress hormone Cortisol if in an abundance will wreak havoc in your system. Too much cortisol will affect things like energy, muscle and joint function, bone health, immune system, sleep quality, skin regeneration (aging you fast!) and Thyroid function (gain weight!) are all affected.
The adrenal glands produce your stress and anabolic hormones and are tied to all the hormones in your body…put too much stress on yourself and you will produce less anabolic hormones and in return your sex hormones will follow…great now I’m tired, fat, and have no sex drive… lovely. Starting to get what I’m talking about? The simple things you have control over in your life (water, sleep, food quality, thoughts) have a huge impact on your health and body shape.
Life is about doing all the little things…In the end those little things become the big things.
