Individuality 13

Individuality 03/09/09

One of the things I stress in my one-on-one sessions and in my group seminars is individuality. We are not all alike...

We are as different on the insides of our bodies as we are on the outsides. If you were to see x-rays of 20 peoples stomachs/digestive systems you would see almost every single one differently shaped… And that means we all break down our foods somewhat differently.

While one person might eat an apple and have it fill them up and keep them satisfied for hours for another person that apple rips right through them and they are blood sugar crashing and craving sweets in as little as 30 minutes.
This is one of the reasons why some people feel great on raw/vegetarian type diets and others closer to an Atkins eating plan.  I eat a pretty “primal diet” full of protein and fat and I feel the best that way. I’ve tried eating a high percentage of healthy carbs and I spend my day floating around like a space cadet. I find myself hungry all day long and I also gain weight/fat pretty darn fast too.
Does this mean there is something wrong with me? Of course not. I just break down my carbohydrates faster than some people. I’m what’s considered a fast oxidizer or a protein type. I aim for at least 50% of each meal/snack to be protein…that’s where I feel the best and stay the leanest.

Maybe you are a slow oxidizer – your cells breakdown carbs slowly and so you need a larger percentage of carbs to keep your energy up. Either way there is no right or wrong. That being said a straight carb diet with no protein will make you feel and look like shit pretty quick regardless of your metabolic type. Working with clients for all these years the one common thing I have found is most people do not eat enough protein.

“One man’s food can be another man’s poison
What I’m trying to say is don’t assume just because your friend or spouse can eat a specific way and feel good so can you. You will have to experiment with what feels best for you. If you eat a meal and shortly after you feel spaced out shaky and your energy is crashing you probably didn’t eat enough protein at that meal…or the type of protein was too light…if you feel quite sluggish and heavy then you probably ate too much protein or the protein was too heavy of a type for you. Example salmon vs. halibut.

How can you tell what Metabolic Type you are? You either need to sit down with someone like myself who does that kind of thing for a living or you can take an online test here – https://www.metabolictypingonline.com/Default.aspx

The Metabolic Type Diet book is also a fantastic book for someone trying to increase their energy and lose weight. There is a metabolic type test in the book as well.
