Why is this so important?
In the simplest of terms…eat too many refined carbs or even an over abundance of healthy carbs on their own without enough protein and not only will you have trouble losing weight but repeating that habit over time you could end up with pre diabetes leading to full blown type 2 diabetes. Apparently 1 in 4 Americans are currently pre diabetic and that number is rising fast so this is not an issue to take lightly.
“On the planet right now 246 million people have diabetes, eight times the number 25 years ago. in 15 years the number is expected to hit 380 million” Those numbers only represent those that actually get diagnosed. it does not factor in people living with onset/pre-diabetes. There is currently just over 300 million people living in America. The latest research coming from the top doctors is that if you have a child born in the year 2000 or later odds are stacked against them enough where you as parents will probably outlive your children! These statements are based on the increase in diabetes and diabetes complications. Kids are eating way too much crap!
Lets chat about Carbohydrates for a bit.
When we eat our carbohydrates they get broken down into simple sugars (glucose) and released into our bloodstream. This is a good thing as this is how we get energy. Shortly after eating the carb of choice our pancreas releases a hormone called Insulin. Insulinʼs job is to open cells in our bodies so it can feed the cells the glucose/glycogen where it is stored until it is converted to energy when needed.
Ok so we eat carbs we get energy cool…
It doesn’t matter if we eat a bunch of spinach, an apple, bowl of oatmeal, a glass of juice, some pop or straight up sugar this same process happens. So donʼt think just because you had a glass of juice vs. a can of coke for breakfast you are ok. For example there will obviously be a difference if we had an apple vs. a glass of apple juice. The quality and quantity all make a difference. Eating one apple vs. 4 apples makes a massive difference on how much sugar/insulin gets released.
Some interesting facts: a 12 ounce can of coca cola has 10 teaspoons of added sugar, the same 12 ounces in apple juice also has 10 teaspoons. So you can see, if you are trying to lose weight then you should stay away from juice!
